The San Juan Islands: Magical Wkend Getaway
Sailing, whale watching, oyster eating, vino drinking, island hoping, alluvthethings, etc.
10.23.2017 // Planning a trip to the San Juan Islands is made for those who like to day dream about sailing through open waters, kayak adventuring, whale watching, oyster eating, vino drinking, island hoping, and relaxation.
Our Top10 destination to explore is Roche Harbor. In order to get here you must either take a small plane, or the ferry to Friday Harbor. This island is so small you could literally explore it in a day so these pictures are simply meant for inspiration + a little content. We'll leave the rest to you when filling in the blanks of your adventure that lies ahead. We promise it will be an easy task. Just relax and see where the day leads you.
STAY
Our recommendation is checking out VRBO or Roche Harbor Accommodations (Quarryman Hall is our personal fav and also where the spa is located).
Alternatively, glamping at Lakedale Resort ("luxury camping, in canvas tents") is another great option during the summer months. The resort has kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, outdoor games, and much more.
EAT + DRINK
Bakery San Juan. Located at 755 Mullis St. Go for their fresh baked goodies and pizzas. Our personal fav, is grabbing some small bites (and for sure a pie or two), and taking them back to the house during your stay. Delish(!!)
Downriggers. "Located on the water's edge of Friday Harbor". Go for the views, vibes, PNW + locale cuisine, and beer/wine/cocktails. The atmosphere is beautiful, and our go-to spot for a mid afternoon glass of vino overlooking the harbor to watch the sailboats, seaplanes and ferry's making their way into Friday Harbor.
Lime Kiln Cafe. Located in Roche Harbor. Go for their freshly made doughnuts and a coffee in the morning (then stroll through the harbor admiring alluv the beautiful sail boats, yachts, etc.). Expect a diner/casual vibe. But for real, go for the doughnuts.
McMillin's. Located in Roche Harbor. Go for their wine list, oysters and fine dining.
Pier One Fish and Brew. Located at 1 Spring St. Friday Harbor. Go for a late afternoon beer + fish and chips. You can't beat the location, which is right in front of the Ferry entry. Expect a very low key vibe here and outdoor picnic table seating.
Salty Fox Coffee. Located at 85 Front Street. Go for coffee and small breakfast bites and pastries. NOTE: If you are taking an early morning Ferry back to the mainland, this is the perfect to-go spot.
San Juan Island Brewing. Located at 410 A Street.
DO + PLAY
Pelindaba Lavender. Located at 45 Hawthorn Ln. Go for the most beautiful lavender farm when in bloom.
San Juan Vineyards. Located at 3136 Roche Harbor Rd. Go for fun! Be sure to try the Mona Vino Blanc which is named after their neighbor, Mona the camel (who you will find grazing across the street).
Explore the South Beach area and search for one of the many San Juan Lighthouses.
That's all for now..
